Established in 1982, Hankintatukku Oy is Finland's largest manufacturer of natural products and a market leader in its field. The company's operations are based on biochemical expertise in nutrition and natural products. Its pharmaceutical factory is located in the pure natural surroundings of Karkkila, which is about 40 miles north-west of Helsinki and set apart from other industry.

Innovative Product Development

Hankintatukku Oy is strongly oriented towards product development. It produces modern, nutritionally effective and well-balanced special preparations for various sectors of the market. Access to the databases of the American Dialog Data Bank, particularly its medical and biochemical files, is an important aid to product development. The company also benefits from the extensive scientific and commercial connections which are available on the Internet.

Guidance from a Scientific Advisory Board

Product development and the realisation of quality control targets are guided by a scientific advisory board which meets regularly. The scientific members of the advisory board are internationally acknowledged experts in their respective specialisms of botany, pharmaceutical science, medicine and foodstuffs biology.

Research is Rewarded with the Highest Quality

The laboratories of the pharmaceutical factory are a valuable asset in product development. Besides the process laboratory, there is an accredited quality control laboratory for microbiological and chemical analysis work. The quality control laboratory is fully equipped to use appropriate analytical techniques such as atomic absorption spectrophotometry, high pressure liquid chromatography, ion exchange chromatography and several gas chromatographies.

Modern Production Technology is the Secret

The manufacture of natural products demands precise and controlled production processes and the very best equipment. The company uses modern pharmaceutical industry machinery to make tablets, capsules and other products. Annual production exceeds 300 million tablets and capsules packaged in secure and user-friendly medicine containers and blister packs. The automated production line is organised around two daily shifts and a weekend shift to ensure an efficient and reliable service which is able to meet delivery deadlines. The extraction of raw materials from plants and medicinal herbs is a demanding liquid production technology. The latest production line to be introduced produces creams, gels, shampoos and conditioners manufactured from these sources.

GMP: the Basis of a Quality and Product Safety System

Production complies with the guidelines for so-called Good Manufacturing Practice, or GMP, which have been compiled for the pharmaceutical factory. These guidelines precisely define the various stages of production and the associated inspection system. The purpose of GMP is to ensure the high quality and absolute safety of products. This is why the GMP quality and safety system covers all of the company's operations. Compliance with the GMP guidelines is supervised by the National Agency for Medicines. The measures used to maintain a high standard of hygiene in the factory include clean zones, closed-off areas, separately ventilated production facilities and fully-automated packaging lines.

Quality Control is Continuous

Quality control is an essential element of production. It begins with the inspection of seeds used in the cultivation of plants and medicinal herbs and continues with raw material reception inspections and several content and hygiene inspections at various stages of production before the finished product is finally delivered to the consumer. A quality assurance organisation is independently responsible for quality control. This organisation is led by a responsible director and a quality assurance manager and is separate from the production organisation. The scientific advisory committee also assists in the guidance of quality control. The operations of Hankintatukku Oy combine firm scientific expertise, innovation and a customer-centred approach, one indication of which is an extensive and expert clientele now spanning the globe.

The Products of a Modern Pharmaceuticals Factory Reach a Global Market
